Dhaka, February 17: Bangladesh is witnessing a significant rise in dengue cases overnight. Local media reported that 14 new dengue infections were confirmed in the last 24 hours, according to health officials.

A spokesperson from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) stated, “As of 8 AM today, 14 new dengue cases have been reported within the past 24 hours.”

The DGHS further detailed that among the new cases, nine were reported in the Barisal division, four in the Khulna division, and one in Rajshahi. All patients are currently hospitalized.

This year, Bangladesh has recorded four deaths due to dengue, with a total of 1,361 infections reported. In comparison, last year, dengue claimed 413 lives and affected 102,861 individuals. In 2024, the virus resulted in 575 fatalities and 101,214 infections.

The health department of Bangladesh issues guidelines to curb the spread of dengue, emphasizing essential measures to assist the public. It is advised that individuals experiencing fever or dengue symptoms consult trained medical professionals and follow their recommendations for treatment.

Dengue is a viral infection caused by the dengue virus (DENV) and is transmitted to humans through the bites of Aedes mosquitoes. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, primarily in urban and semi-urban areas where these mosquitoes thrive. Prevention and control of dengue rely heavily on vector control measures. While there is no specific treatment for dengue, early detection and appropriate medical care can significantly reduce mortality rates.
