
New Delhi, 27 December: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Ayush Mhatre as the captain of the Indian men’s Under-19 team for the upcoming 2026 World Cup. The tournament will be held from 15 January to 6 February in Zimbabwe and Namibia. Meanwhile, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been appointed captain for the team’s South African tour.
Before the World Cup, India is scheduled to play three 50-over matches against South Africa from 3 to 7 January. All these matches will take place at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. Injured players Ayush Mhatre and Vihan Malhotra will not participate in these matches. During Mhatre’s absence, Vaibhav Suryavanshi will lead the team on the South African tour.
According to information received by (Daily Kiran), Ayush Mhatre and Vihan Malhotra underwent wrist injury assessments in Mumbai on Friday. Their current condition remains unclear.
On Saturday, the BCCI issued a statement saying, “Both players will report to the BCCI Centre of Excellence for treatment and will join the team for the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup.”
Sixteen teams will compete in the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup, divided into four groups. After the group stage, the tournament will proceed to the Super Six stage, followed by the semi-finals and final.
India has won the Under-19 World Cup five times (2000, 2008, 2012, 2018, and 2022). The Indian team is placed in Group A alongside New Zealand, the USA, and Bangladesh. India’s campaign begins on 15 January against the USA, followed by a match against Bangladesh on 17 January and New Zealand on 24 January.

Dipesh, Kishan Kumar Singh, Udhav Mohan, Yuvraj Gohil, and Rahul Kumar.
