
New Delhi, July 2: Aarti Singh Rao is a prominent name in skeet shooting in India. She has won medals for the country in international competitions in this discipline.
Born on July 3, 1979, in Rewari, Haryana, Aarti comes from a family actively involved in both shooting and politics. This background has allowed her to establish herself in both fields.
Aarti’s introduction to shooting was quite daunting. As a child, she was frightened by the sound of gunfire at home. Her mother reassured her, explaining that her father, Rao Inderjeet Singh, was practicing shooting. To help alleviate Aarti’s fears, he began taking her along to his practice sessions. This experience laid the foundation for her successful shooting career. Aarti quickly gained recognition for her precision with a rifle.
She surpassed the record of 14-time national champion Maanser Singh. Aarti has won four medals at the Asian Championships for her country. In 2003, she earned a silver medal in the women’s skeet event in New Delhi. This was followed by a bronze in Bangkok in 2004, a gold in 2005, and another silver in 2009, bringing pride to her nation.
Educated at Delhi University, Aarti’s family is a prominent political dynasty in Haryana. Her grandfather, Rao Birender Singh, served as the Chief Minister of Haryana, while her father, Rao Inderjeet Singh, is a minister in the central government.
After her sports career, Aarti became active in politics. In the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections, she was elected as the MLA from the Ateli constituency. Currently, she serves as the Health Minister of Haryana and is also encouraging athletes as the president of the Haryana Para Sports Association.
