Ayush Mhatre Becomes Youngest Player to Score Half-Century at MA Chidambaram Stadium

Chennai, April 3: In an exciting match of IPL 2026, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced off against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday. CSK’s batsman Ayush Mhatre delivered an outstanding performance, scoring a half-century and becoming the youngest player to achieve this milestone at the venue.

At just 18 years and 261 days old, Ayush reached the half-century mark, equaling the record for the most scores over 50 runs in the IPL before turning 19, previously held by Prithvi Shaw. This was Ayush’s second time crossing the 50-run mark in the IPL. Prithvi Shaw also achieved this feat twice before his 19th birthday, while Vaibhav Suryavanshi leads the list with three scores over fifty.

Ayush played a remarkable innings, scoring 73 runs off 43 balls with a strike rate of 169, including 6 fours and 5 sixes. After losing the toss and batting first, CSK had a shaky start, losing Sanju Samson for just 7 runs. However, Ayush stabilized the innings alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, forming a partnership of 82 runs for the second wicket. Ruturaj contributed 28 runs off 22 balls, while Ayush remained a dominant force against the PBKS bowlers.

For this match, CSK made one change to their playing eleven, replacing Matthew Short with Prashant Veer, who was acquired for ₹14.20 crores in the auction. Despite the change, CSK’s start to IPL 2026 has been challenging, having lost their opening match against the Rajasthan Royals by 8 wickets.
