Bhubaneswar, April 3: The opposition party Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has sharply criticized the government for transferring Palasa and Ichchapuram from Odisha’s East Coast Railway zone to Andhra Pradesh’s South Coast Railway zone.
BJD claims that the BJP government, which came to power under the slogan of ‘Double Engine, Double Development,’ is not giving Odisha its rightful share. The party argues that this decision will adversely affect the state’s development and interests.
Senior party leaders Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak and spokesperson Dr. Lenin Mohanty stated that the East Coast Railway is one of the highest revenue-generating railway divisions in the country. Nayak alleged that there are attempts to weaken the East Coast Railway to appease Andhra Pradesh. He pointed out that nearly a year ago, parts of Koraput and Rayagada districts were also included in the South Coast Railway, and now Palasa and Ichchapuram have been added on Odisha Day.
Nayak emphasized that BJP leaders, who promised ‘Double Development,’ are not showing the courage to raise their voices against this injustice. He lamented that Odisha’s 20 BJP MPs and state leadership remain silent, which is quite unfortunate.
He also noted that despite having a Union Minister for Railways from Odisha, decisions are being made in favor of Andhra Pradesh instead of the state’s interests.
Despite BJP’s promises, at least six districts in Odisha still lack railway connectivity. Mohanty demanded a complete reversal of this decision and called for the inclusion of the railway areas of Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj districts into the East Coast Railway to strengthen it.
