Canberra, March 23: The Australian government announced on Monday that it will expedite approvals for data centers that utilize water sustainably and support the National Clean Energy Transition.
Industry, Innovation, and Science Minister Tim Ayres stated that the new framework for data centers and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure developers will provide clear and consistent signals, making it easier to invest in Australia.
In a joint statement with Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen and Assistant Minister for Science, Technology, and the Digital Economy Andrew Charlton, Ayres emphasized that the needs of the Australian people should be prioritized in data center development.
Chris Bowen remarked, “It’s no surprise that Australia has become an attractive investment destination for data center technology. We take great pride in our abundant renewable energy resources; our sun and wind have already helped us achieve 51% renewable energy on our grid.”
Under the new framework, data center projects are expected to support energy transition, use water sustainably and responsibly, and invest in local skills and jobs. Additionally, these projects will enhance Australia’s research capabilities and will be fast-tracked through planning and approval processes.
Ayres noted, “Australia is open for business, but it must be business that prioritizes the interests of our nation.”
According to a report by the Xinhua News Agency, the Australian Energy Market Operator projected that data centers would consume approximately 6% of the electricity supplied to the grid by 2030 and 12% by 2050, up from just 2% in 2024-25.
The new framework stipulates that new data centers will be expected to acquire new and extra clean energy generation or storage to meet demand, adopt the best efficiency measures in the industry, and cover their share of transmission and distribution infrastructure costs. Bowen stated that these measures will help keep energy prices low for all consumers.
