Guwahati, June 24: Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that several government medical colleges and hospitals in the state have received accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH). This marks a significant step towards standardizing and improving healthcare services in government institutions.
In a social media post, the Chief Minister stated that the state government had directed all medical colleges in Assam to obtain NABH accreditation. The aim is to establish uniform standards for healthcare services in government hospitals and enhance patient care.
He revealed that five major medical institutions have already been accredited by NABH. These include Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Tezpur Medical College and Hospital, Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital in Barpeta (FAAMCH), and Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH).
The Chief Minister emphasized that this accreditation reflects adherence to nationally recognized standards in areas such as patient safety, quality of care, hospital management, clinical protocols, and healthcare infrastructure.
He also mentioned that the inspection of Silchar Medical College and Hospital has been completed, and the institution is currently awaiting the results of the accreditation process.
In addition to the medical colleges, two Critical Care Assam Centers located in Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur have also received NABH certification. He expressed optimism that more healthcare facilities would be added to this list in the coming months.
According to officials, NABH accreditation is considered one of the most important quality certifications for healthcare institutions in the country. It aids hospitals in enhancing operational capacity, achieving better patient outcomes, and maintaining global standards in medical services.
The Assam government is focused on improving healthcare infrastructure and the quality of services in government hospitals. In recent years, the state has established new medical colleges, increased MBBS seats, and strengthened specialized healthcare facilities in districts.
A senior official stated that the increase in NABH accreditation among government hospitals will boost public trust in the healthcare system and support the state’s larger goal of providing accessible, affordable, and high-quality medical services.
