Assam Upgrades 354 Tea Garden Hospitals to Enhance Healthcare Access

Guwahati, June 8: Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a significant initiative to improve healthcare services in tea garden regions. The state government is upgrading 354 tea garden hospitals and has already established 200 Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs to enhance medical access for the tribal communities working in these gardens.

In a post on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring quality healthcare facilities for tea garden workers and their families.

Sarma stated that they are revolutionizing healthcare services in tea gardens. “The upgrade of 354 hospitals is underway, and 200 Aarogya Mandirs are operational. Our double-engine government is dedicated to the holistic welfare of the tea garden community, with healthcare services being a top priority,” he said.

The initiative aims to make healthcare services more comprehensive in tea gardens, many of which are located in remote and rural areas where access to medical facilities has traditionally been limited.

According to the Chief Minister, 200 Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs have already been established in tea garden areas, with additional centers in progress. The government is also investing in the modernization and strengthening of the 354 tea garden hospitals to improve healthcare infrastructure and service delivery.

Officials reported that each hospital is receiving financial support to enhance basic development and health facilities. Workers and their families are expected to benefit from improved primary healthcare services, maternal and child health care, disease screening, preventive care, and essential medications.

The tea industry in Assam is one of the largest employment sectors, providing jobs to millions across hundreds of tea gardens. Healthcare has been recognized as a crucial area needing intervention to improve the quality of life and social welfare indicators in tea garden communities.

In recent years, the state government has launched several welfare measures for tea garden tribes, focusing on health, education, housing, and livelihood support. The Ayushman Aarogya Mandir initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen grassroots healthcare infrastructure and ensure that essential medical services reach underserved populations.

The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to the overall development of tea garden workers and their families, with healthcare remaining a major priority.
