Assam to Open Northeasts First Visa Application Center in Guwahati

Assams Chief Minister announces the opening of the Northeasts first visa application center in Guwahati to ease international travel.

Guwahati, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday the inauguration of the Northeast’s first visa application center, set to open on Thursday in Guwahati. This initiative aims to make international travel more accessible and convenient for residents of the region.

In a post on the social media platform X, Sarma highlighted that the new center will provide visa services for various countries to the people of Northeast India. He encouraged residents to prepare for travel, asking, “Assam, are you ready to fly?” ahead of the opening on October 15.

The center is being established by VFS Global, a company that offers visa application and related services on behalf of governments and diplomatic missions worldwide. According to the Chief Minister, the Guwahati center will facilitate visa applications for 14 countries, including several European destinations under the Schengen visa system.

The list of countries includes Austria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Italy, Latvia, Switzerland, Cyprus, Egypt, Ireland, Japan, Malta, and Morocco. The Schengen visa allows eligible travelers to visit multiple countries within the Schengen area on a single visa, subject to applicable entry conditions.

This new facility is expected to enhance access to international travel-related services for residents of Assam and neighboring states, particularly those planning trips for tourism, education, business, or other purposes.

As the largest city in Northeast India and a major commercial and administrative hub, Guwahati serves as a gateway for travelers from across the region. The establishment of this center is anticipated to streamline the visa application process, making services more accessible to applicants, although final visa decisions will remain with the respective countries and their authorized officials.

This announcement comes as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Guwahati’s role as a center for regional connectivity, commerce, and services. Operational details, including the appointment process, application requirements, and service fees, will be available through the authorized service provider. This initiative aims to improve regional access to visa application facilities and reduce logistical challenges associated with international travel for applicants from Assam and other northeastern states.
