Assam Sees Significant Drop in Crime Rate, Says Minister Jayanta Malla Barua

Guwahati, May 8: Assam’s Minister Jayanta Malla Barua announced on Friday that the state has recorded the fastest decline in crime rates in the country. He referenced the latest “Crime in India 2024” report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

In a post on X, the minister shared that Assam registered 49,552 criminal cases in 2024, a significant drop from 64,959 cases in 2023 and 68,937 cases in 2022.

According to the data provided by the minister, there has been an overall decline of approximately 28 percent in crime cases over the past two years.

He noted that Assam’s current crime rate stands at 137 cases per one lakh population, significantly lower than the national average of 418 cases per one lakh, as reported by the NCRB.

The minister also highlighted a remarkable improvement in the rate of filing chargesheets, which increased from below 50 percent in previous years to 67.1 percent in 2024.

He attributed this rise in chargesheet filings to quicker investigations, better coordination among law enforcement agencies, and a robust legal process.

Malla Barua credited the improved law and order situation to sustained governance initiatives, enhanced policing measures, and coordinated efforts by the state administration over recent years.

He stated that Assam, which has long struggled with insurgency, unrest, and security challenges, is gradually entering a new phase of peace, stability, and economic progress.

The minister further emphasized that a stable law and order environment is essential for attracting investment and accelerating development activities across the state.

Officials reported that the state government has intensified efforts to curb criminal activities through the modernization of police systems, improvement of surveillance mechanisms, and strengthening of intelligence networks.

According to officials, the NCRB report reflects the changing security landscape in Assam and indicates improvements in public safety indicators across several districts.

They added that the government is committed to further strengthening the police system and maintaining peace to uphold the state’s development agenda and investor confidence.
