
Shillong, March 24: Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, the Director General of Assam Rifles, emphasized the need to maintain security and integrity along the India-Myanmar border and in the Kashmir Valley. He urged the force to be prepared for emerging security challenges and future contingencies.
The Assam Rifles Commanders’ Conference was held at the headquarters of Assam Rifles in Laitkor, Shillong, under the leadership of Lieutenant General Lakhera. The event saw participation from formation commanders, battalion commanders, and staff officers from various formations.
Lieutenant General Lakhera commended personnel at all ranks for their professionalism and effective performance, even in challenging circumstances. Discussions during the conference focused on enhancing operational capabilities, promoting combat readiness, and improving overall efficiency.
The agenda included developing a roadmap for incorporating next-generation weapons and equipment, sharing best practices, and enhancing training and skill development initiatives.
India shares a 1,643-kilometer-long unfenced border with Myanmar, traversing four northeastern states: Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km), and Mizoram (510 km). The Assam Rifles is primarily responsible for securing most of this sensitive area, with deployments also in Jammu and Kashmir.
During the conference, Assam Rifles was awarded the Rajbhasha Shield for exemplary implementation of language initiatives, with 23 Assam Rifles securing first place, followed by 28 and 34 Assam Rifles in second and third places, respectively.
The Director General praised the commanders for their efforts in maintaining peace and stability and called for heightened vigilance in a dynamic security environment. The conference concluded with a renewed commitment to operational excellence.
Meanwhile, on the eve of the 191st Raising Day of Assam Rifles, a vibrant cultural evening was organized at the Shillong headquarters, inaugurated by Meghalaya Governor C.H. Vijayshankar.
The event showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Northeast, featuring traditional dance performances from Mizoram and Manipur by students from Delhi University. An impressive display of mixed martial arts was also presented by the Lilikhrei folk group from Nagaland, the Assam Rifles Jazz Band, and the ARTC sports team. Students from Assam Rifles Public School added to the festive atmosphere with a lively cultural presentation.
