Guwahati, June 29: In a significant operation against drug trafficking, the Assam Rifles and Assam Police have jointly seized narcotics worth approximately ₹5 crore on the Assam-Mizoram border. Two alleged drug traffickers were also arrested during the operation.
According to officials, the operation was launched late Saturday night in the Lalapur area of Cachar district based on specific intelligence regarding the smuggling of drugs across the inter-state border. As security personnel advanced, two suspects reportedly attempted to flee the scene. The joint team pursued them and apprehended them shortly thereafter.
During the search operation, security forces recovered 42 soap boxes containing suspected heroin, estimated to be worth around ₹2 crore in the illegal market. Additionally, around 10,000 yaba tablets valued at approximately ₹3 crore were also seized.
Two mobile phones were confiscated during the operation, believed to have been used by the accused. The seized drugs, mobile phones, and the arrested individuals have been handed over to Cachar Police for filing a case and further legal action.
The police have initiated an investigation to determine the origin of the seized drugs, their intended destination, and whether the suspects are connected to a larger inter-state or cross-border drug trafficking network. Officials stated that this operation was conducted based on solid intelligence and demonstrates improved coordination between the Assam Rifles and Cachar Police in addressing the drug trafficking issue in the region.
Security agencies have been closely monitoring the Assam-Mizoram border, as drug syndicates have repeatedly attempted to smuggle heroin, methamphetamine tablets, and other prohibited items through this route. Authorities have hailed the recent seizure as a major success in the ongoing campaign against drug trafficking in the Northeast and confirmed that intelligence-based operations will continue to dismantle organized smuggling networks active in the area.
