New Delhi, July 21: The Delhi Police has ramped up its response following the violence that erupted during the Cockroach People’s Party (CJP) ‘Parliament March’. FIRs have been filed at Connaught Place and Parliament Street police stations for stone-pelting, attacks on police personnel, and damage to public property. A case has been registered against unidentified rioters at the Connaught Place police station.
The police investigation is primarily focused on video footage. They have over 250 recordings from mobile phones, CCTV, drone cameras, and police body cameras. These videos are being used to identify those involved in the violence.
Authorities are also examining whether any of the rioters have a criminal record. Investigators are looking into whether the individuals arrived at Jantar Mantar in a premeditated manner. Additionally, they are probing if there were any attempts to incite or organize people via WhatsApp or Telegram groups prior to the violence in New Delhi.
According to the Delhi Police, the protest turned violent near Regal Cinema in the outer circle of Connaught Place on Monday. Rioters vandalized police vehicles and hurled stones at officers on duty. Several shops in the Janpath area were also damaged, creating chaos in the vicinity.
The police reported that the situation deteriorated continuously during the protest. Demonstrators were warned multiple times and instructed to comply with legal directives, but they refused to disperse. The police stated that the protesters deliberately violated the imposed prohibitory orders and adopted a violent stance.
The police noted that the rioters attacked officers with stones and other objects. They attempted to breach police barricades, vandalized police and government vehicles, and caused significant damage to public property. The police emphasized that this violence posed a serious threat to law and order, security arrangements, and the safety of officers on duty.
According to the police, over 118 police officers and personnel were injured in the violence. Among the injured are ranks including Special Commissioner of Police, Joint Commissioner of Police, Additional Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, and Assistant Commissioner of Police. Several female officers were also among the injured.
The Delhi Police reported that around 70 protesters have been detained so far, and the process of filing FIRs against them under various sections is ongoing.
