Assam Governments Major Welfare Schemes to Resume in August: Chief Minister Sarma

Guwahati, July 20: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday that the BJP-led state government will restart its major welfare schemes in August.

In a post on the social media platform X, Sarma stated that some well-known programs are returning to the doorsteps of the people. Starting this August, the Arunodoi scheme, subsidized essential goods, and student welfare initiatives will once again be available to the residents of Assam.

According to the schedule shared by the Chief Minister, the distribution of subsidized lentils and sugar will recommence on August 1, while the monthly financial assistance under the Arunodoi scheme will resume on August 3.

The government will also begin distributing application forms for its student welfare initiatives—Nijut Moina and Nijut Babu—starting August 6. Another significant program, Jiban Prerana Asani, is set to restart in September.

The Chief Minister described these initiatives as Assam’s remarkable welfare programs, emphasizing that they will benefit beneficiaries across the state once again.

The Arunodoi scheme is the Assam government’s flagship direct benefit transfer (DBT) initiative aimed at providing financial assistance to economically weaker families, particularly women. Since its inception, it has been one of the largest social welfare programs in the state, periodically expanded to include more beneficiaries.

Under the subsidized food scheme, eligible families can purchase essential items like lentils and sugar at lower prices through the public distribution system. The Nijut Moina and Nijut Babu schemes focus on promoting higher education by providing financial support to students and reducing dropout rates.

This announcement comes at a time when the state government is consistently emphasizing infrastructure development, economic growth, and the distribution of welfare schemes.

The resumption of these programs is expected to benefit millions of families, students, and economically disadvantaged groups throughout Assam. The Chief Minister’s announcement also reaffirms the government’s commitment to continuing its welfare programs.
