Assam Congress MLA Nurul Huda Opposes Interference in Religious Practices by Proposed UCC

Guwahati, May 20: Assam Congress MLA Nurul Huda criticized the BJP government on Wednesday regarding the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He stated that the party will oppose any law that interferes with the traditions, customs, and beliefs of any religion.

In a conversation with reporters, Huda mentioned that the Congress legislative party will soon hold a meeting to discuss various issues, including the UCC bill that is set to be presented in the upcoming assembly session. He noted that senior leaders and observers from the party may also participate in this meeting, where all legislators will collectively decide on the party’s strategy within the assembly.

“Our party’s top leadership will discuss with all Congress MLAs, and a collective decision will be made. Whatever decision the leadership takes, we will all accept it,” he said.

Regarding the UCC, Huda acknowledged that the government might have enough support to pass the bill, but the opposition will continue to resist provisions that affect religious traditions and social customs.

“The government can introduce the UCC, but we oppose their proposal. Every religion has its own traditions, rules, and practices. If any law harms those religious principles, it will naturally face opposition,” he added.

Huda also rejected attempts to divide people based on language or ethnic identity. He stated, “People ask who is an Assamese Muslim, who is Bengali or Nepali. We are born on the land of Assam and are children of Assam. People should accept us as Assamese.”

The Congress MLA accused the state government of failing to control inflation. He remarked that since the elections, the government has distanced itself from the common people’s issues and is only focused on retaining power.

“Prices of essential goods have surged significantly. The government has failed to control inflation. People voted with hope, but now the government is ignoring the concerns of the public,” he stated.

It is noteworthy that the Assam government has indicated that the UCC bill may be introduced in the first session of the newly formed assembly. A heated debate between the ruling party and the opposition is expected during the four-day assembly session starting Thursday.
