New Delhi, July 28: Supriya Sule, a Member of Parliament from the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), has called on the central government to establish a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) regarding the Anti-Paper Leak Law. She emphasized that opposition members should be included in this committee to create a robust and effective law to prevent paper leaks.
During the discussion on the Lok Sabha’s Lok Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Sule also demanded an investigation into the alleged police actions against youth during recent anti-paper leak protests across the country.
In response to BJP MP Tejasvi Surya’s remarks about the opposition’s belief that youth support them, Sule stated, “Do not be under the illusion that the youth are with you.” Earlier, Surya had criticized the opposition, claiming that their assumption of youth support regarding the paper leak issue was a significant misunderstanding.
Sule appreciated the draft of the Lok Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, stating that the matter should not be a political debate but rather one concerning the future of students.
She remarked, “I am in the opposition, yet I will say this bill was good because it is not a subject for debate.” However, she questioned why a committee was needed if the 2024 law was fulfilling its objectives. “If this bill had been effectively implemented in 2024, we wouldn’t have seen protests at Jantar Mantar,” she added.
Sule pointed out that the bill was introduced on June 21, 2024, and a committee was formed the very next day for recommendations. She questioned the urgency in bringing forth the law when no committee existed prior.
Highlighting the issue of student suicides following the NEET paper leak, Sule stressed that all MPs should speak with sensitivity, empathy, and humility when it comes to children’s matters.
She criticized the central government for not engaging with the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu regarding NEET. Sule noted the widening gap between the rich and the poor in the country, as well as the booming coaching industry.
Sule also referenced NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal’s statement, which suggested that if former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had resigned 15 days earlier, the controversy might have been avoided. She stated, “Not just me, but BJP’s allies are saying this too.”
She mentioned Bhujbal’s observation that the student protests were a sign of discontent. Sule expressed hope that the central government would heed this message.
Furthermore, she called for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the alleged police brutality against youth during the nationwide anti-paper leak movement.
“The scenes that emerged were horrifying. A transparent investigation is necessary to understand what went wrong that day, to prevent such incidents in the future,” she stated. Responding to allegations of foreign funding behind the protests, she noted that students themselves were creating memes about it.
Presenting two key demands from her party, Sule urged the government to form a JPC if it genuinely wants to change the system, inviting all stakeholders to create a law that cannot be leaked. “Call for an all-party meeting; we are all on the same side,” she asserted.
She further stated that the second demand is to investigate incidents where actions were taken against students nationwide. Sule concluded by saying that this struggle is not between political parties but between the system and the aspirations of the youth.
