Guwahati, March 27: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that if the BJP returns to power in the upcoming assembly elections, his government will intensify its anti-encroachment campaign, aiming to free up to 500,000 hectares of encroached land.
While campaigning for BJP candidate Neelima Devi in Mangaldoi, Sarma launched a sharp attack on opposition leaders, stating that figures like Badruddin Ajmal and Gaurav Gogoi cannot stand against the will of the people of Assam.
Taking a firm stance on the issue of encroachment, the Chief Minister warned of stricter actions in the future. He stated, “We have already cleared approximately 150,000 hectares of encroached land. If we form the government again, we will free up 500,000 hectares. Those attempting to illegally occupy land will face even harsher actions.”
Sarma emphasized that the BJP-led government has conducted numerous eviction drives targeting alleged encroachments on government land, forest areas, and protected zones across the state in recent years.
The government has particularly framed the eviction campaigns in regions such as Darrang, Nagaon, and parts of Upper Assam as efforts to reclaim land for tribal communities and promote development.
The Chief Minister has repeatedly stated that such measures are necessary to protect the land rights of the people of Assam. However, these campaigns have sparked political controversy, with opposition parties criticizing the government over alleged humanitarian concerns and the displacement of families.
Reiterating the BJP’s position, Sarma asserted that the government’s actions are aimed at safeguarding the interests and identity of the state.
