Guwahati, February 19: Akhil Gogoi, the leader of the Raijor Dal and an MLA from Sivasagar, expressed his disappointment in the Assam Assembly on Thursday. He noted that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma did not address him or acknowledge his presence during his final speech of the session.

While raising the issue in the assembly, Gogoi pointed out that despite being present, the Chief Minister neither looked at him nor spoke about him.

“I was also present in the assembly today. I don’t understand why the Chief Minister did not look my way or engage with me,” Gogoi stated.

In response during his concluding speech, Chief Minister Sarma made several comments directed at the Raijor Dal MLA, some of which were laced with sarcasm.

Congratulating Gogoi for his speech, the Chief Minister advised him to speak like “a mature person” in the assembly and to maintain parliamentary decorum.

Sarma also wished Gogoi luck for his upcoming electoral battles, expressing hope that the Raijor Dal leader would emerge victorious again.

Moreover, the Chief Minister highlighted the distinction between leaders who rise from grassroots struggles and those who enter politics with privilege. Referring to Gogoi, Sarma remarked that he is a leader forged through years of struggle and activism, rather than someone who came into politics with a “silver spoon.” This statement was interpreted as both a compliment and a sharp political jab.

Reactions from both the ruling and opposition parties followed Sarma’s remarks, underscoring the frequent heated debates that characterize assembly proceedings.

In his closing remarks, Sarma thanked all ministers and legislators from both sides for their participation and cooperation during the budget session. He emphasized that healthy debate and criticism are essential for a functioning democracy and expressed hope for constructive discussions in future sessions.
