New Delhi, July 11: The New Delhi Zoo has witnessed a rare event with the birth of three Asian lion cubs by lioness Mahagauri and lion Maheshwar within the same year.
Officials announced that Mahagauri and her three newborn cubs are currently housed in a secure maternity room. This environment is designed to provide the necessary calm and uninterrupted space for their early development.
According to the statement, the cubs are under the constant care of their mother, while the zoo’s veterinary and animal care teams monitor them closely through a CCTV surveillance system.
This successful breeding achievement is a significant milestone for the conservation of the endangered Asian lion, as highlighted by zoo officials.
On April 27, Maheshwar and Mahagauri welcomed two healthy cubs: a male named Kartik and a female named Karni. Both cubs are thriving in the zoo’s care.
Currently, the national zoo is home to six Asian lions, including three males—Sundaram, Maheshwar, and Kartik—and three females—Mahagauri, Shailaja, and Karni.
Last month, Kirti Vardhan Singh, the Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, launched a smart digital guide called the ‘NZDP Companion App’ at the New Delhi Zoo.
The app aims to enhance visitor experiences through smart navigation and facilitate online ticket booking. Singh also inaugurated self-ticketing kiosks to streamline this process.
Available on both Android and iOS platforms, the ‘NZDP Companion App’ features an interactive digital map and smart navigation system, allowing visitors to locate animal enclosures, restrooms, buggy points, exits, and other amenities.
The app also offers themed tours, including express tours, family tours, grand zoo tours, and personalized ‘My Tour’ options.
Self-ticketing kiosks provide online ticket booking through UPI-based digital payments, along with free Wi-Fi connectivity for on-site ticket purchases.
