New Delhi, March 24: Former Indian fast bowler Ashok Dinda’s cricket career has been marked by significant ups and downs. His journey to the Indian team was fraught with challenges. At one point, Dinda did not even have a home to live in, nor the funds to buy cricket gear.
Born on March 25, 1984, in Medinipur, West Bengal, Dinda had a keen interest in cricket from a young age. However, his family’s financial situation was dire, leaving him unable to afford even basic equipment. Despite these hurdles, Dinda remained determined and dedicated to improving his bowling skills. Initially, he faced rejection from several cricket clubs that turned him away. In an interview, he recounted how, in 2001, he played for a club in Kolkata but lacked even a roof over his head.
Dinda communicated his struggles to the club, but they dismissed his concerns. To learn the intricacies of cricket, he left home to stay with his uncle, who lived far from the training grounds. Dinda would leave home at 5 AM, changing buses twice to reach the field. Eventually, when he began playing for the High Court team, he secured accommodation, but the distance remained a challenge.
Undeterred, Dinda fought through adversity and secured a place in Bengal’s domestic team. His impressive performances in domestic cricket paved the way for his selection in the Indian team in 2009. He made his international debut against Sri Lanka on December 9, 2009. However, his struggles continued as he frequently found himself in and out of the team. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he played for several major teams, including Kolkata Knight Riders, Rising Pune Supergiants, Delhi Daredevils, and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Dinda represented India in a total of 13 One Day Internationals and 9 T20 Internationals, claiming 29 wickets. In first-class cricket, he took 420 wickets across 116 matches. In 2021, Dinda announced his retirement from all formats of cricket and ventured into politics. He contested the Bengal elections in 2021 as a candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party from the Moyna assembly seat, successfully winning the election.
