Bengaluru, March 29: The IPL 2026 season kicked off with an exciting match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M. Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium. Ishan Kishan made a remarkable debut as captain, scoring a stunning 80 runs off just 38 balls. This performance has set a new record for the highest score by a captain in their debut match for SRH.
Kishan surpassed the previous record held by Manish Pandey, who scored an unbeaten 69 runs off 41 balls in his debut match as captain in 2021. David Warner had previously scored 53 runs off 42 balls in 2015. Kishan’s innings included 8 fours and 5 sixes, showcasing a strike rate of 210. After the early dismissals of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, Kishan effectively stabilized SRH’s innings.
He formed a crucial partnership of 97 runs with Heinrich Klaasen, leaving RCB’s bowling attack struggling to contain him. With this innings, Kishan also crossed the milestone of 3,000 runs in the IPL, becoming the sixth-fastest player to achieve this feat. He surpassed KL Rahul, who reached 3,000 runs in 2,203 balls, while Kishan accomplished it in just 2,180 balls. Klaasen contributed with a quick 31 runs off 22 balls.
Unfortunately, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head had disappointing outings, scoring only 7 and 11 runs, respectively. Nitish Kumar Reddy also struggled, managing just a single run. In the closing overs, Aniket Verma played a brilliant knock, scoring 43 runs off just 18 balls, helping SRH post a total of 201 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs.
