Mumbai, July 15: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant has expressed strong opinions regarding the legal notices sent to rebel MPs, his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and issues surrounding the Ram Raksha movement, women’s reservation, and delimitation. He accused those engaging in unconstitutional and illegal activities of frequenting Delhi.
Regarding the legal notices and the meeting with Amit Shah, Sawant questioned why the accused would need to seek security if the allegations against them were false. He stated that only those aware of their illegal actions would be running around seeking help. He emphasized that individuals who have abandoned their ideologies for political gain lack a moral foundation.
When rebel MPs claimed their meeting with Amit Shah was for the development of their constituencies, Sawant dismissed this assertion. He noted that development has occurred in opposition MPs’ areas throughout various governments, from Jawaharlal Nehru to Manmohan Singh. If development were the sole objective, opposition MPs would have joined the ruling party earlier. He insisted that politics should not merely be a means to acquire wealth and power but should be grounded in ideology and principles. The government’s responsibility is to provide resources for development, not to encourage party-switching among MPs.
Sawant also mentioned the limited funds available through the MP Local Area Development Scheme. He criticized some leaders for choosing power for personal gain rather than for developmental politics. He raised allegations of corruption related to the Ram Temple Trust, suggesting that some individuals seek to join institutions solely for profit.
In response to questions about the upcoming Ram Raksha movement in Nagpur on July 18, Sawant stated that his stance is to protect Lord Ram and uphold his ideals. He accused the BJP and its allies of diverting issues and noted that the public is now aware of the discrepancies between the government’s words and actions through social media and other platforms. Instead of addressing allegations of corruption, political discourse is often shifted to other topics.
On women’s reservation and delimitation, Sawant pointed out that the delimitation issue was linked to the women’s reservation bill without proper discussion. He warned that if future parliamentary seats are determined solely by population, several southern states could see a reduction in representation, while northern states with larger populations might gain influence. This could lead to political imbalance between northern and southern India, a concern he had previously raised in Parliament regarding the government’s inconsistencies.
Responding to the meeting between senior NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) leader Jayant Patil and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Sawant stated that there is no issue with meetings. He expressed confidence that under Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership, Shiv Sena (UBT) will continue to uphold its ideological commitments.
