New Delhi, March 3: Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), confirmed on Tuesday that he will appear before the Delhi Assembly’s Privileges Committee on March 6 regarding the ‘Hanging House’ controversy. He has also requested that the proceedings be live-streamed for transparency.
The Privileges Committee of the Delhi Assembly has summoned Kejriwal and former Deputy Speaker Manish Sisodia to present their case concerning the authenticity of claims related to the ‘Hanging House’ issue on March 6.
In a Facebook post confirming his attendance, Kejriwal highlighted the pressing issues facing Delhi, including pollution, damaged roads, and overflowing garbage. He noted the shortage of medicines in hospitals and stated that the Assembly has called him to inquire about the ‘Hanging House.’
Kejriwal mentioned that he has written to the Privileges Committee, informing them of his intention to attend on March 6 as per their summons. He emphasized the need for transparency and requested that the proceedings be broadcast live.
He attached a copy of his letter to the committee in his social media post. In the letter, he stated that in compliance with the notice, he will personally appear before the Privileges Committee at 3:00 PM on March 6, 2026, at the specified location. He asserted that his presence would not adversely affect his legal and constitutional rights, which he has clearly reserved.
In the interest of transparency and public accountability, he reiterated his request for live broadcasting of the committee’s proceedings and asked for confirmation of receipt of this information.
This controversy began in 2021 during the tenure of the AAP government when the then Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, Ram Niwas Goyal, claimed that a chamber located beneath the Assembly building was used as a hanging house during British rule.
He alleged that an underground tunnel connected the Assembly complex to the Red Fort and was possibly used by British officials to transport prisoners sentenced to death for execution.
The current BJP government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has dismissed the claims made during the AAP administration. The BJP government argues that the underground chambers were not hanging houses but merely staircases used for delivering tiffin trays during the British era.
