Worcester, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : Arlene Kelly, the talented all-rounder from Ireland, has announced her retirement from international cricket. The 32-year-old made her decision following a match against the England women’s team in Worcester. This marks the end of her impressive four-and-a-half-year international career.
Born in New Zealand, Kelly moved to Ireland in 2022 after obtaining an Irish passport. Initially, she aimed to play domestic cricket, but her outstanding performances quickly caught the attention of selectors. In her debut domestic match, Kelly scored 60 runs and took three wickets for 35 runs, earning her the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
Just weeks later, on June 3, 2022, she made her international debut for Ireland against South Africa. In that match, she took two wickets for 25 runs, helping Ireland secure a surprising 10-run victory over the then World Cup runners-up.
Despite initial doubts about her prospects in international cricket, Kelly soon became a vital member of the Irish team. She played in 110 out of 117 matches for the Ireland women’s team, establishing herself as one of the most reliable players. Known for her accurate line and length, she ranks as the third-highest wicket-taker for Ireland, trailing only Isobel Joyce and Laura Delany.
Kelly’s career highlight came in 2023 during a T20 international match against the Netherlands, where she claimed five wickets for just 12 runs. Her exceptional performances earned her the title of ‘Irish Cricket International Woman Player of the Year’ and the ICC ‘International Woman Player of the Month’ award for August 2023.
Reflecting on her decision, Kelly expressed her gratitude, stating, “It has been an honor to represent Ireland over the past four and a half years. I feel fortunate to have created so many wonderful memories both on and off the field. However, it is now the right time to retire and return to New Zealand to be with my family and friends.”
She extended her thanks to Cricket Ireland, her coaches, and her teammates for their support, saying, “You welcomed me with open arms and allowed me to be myself. Being part of this changing room has been special, and I know this group has the potential to achieve great things. I will continue to follow and support the team from the sidelines.”
Ireland captain Gaby Lewis praised Kelly’s contributions, highlighting her impact since joining the Malahide Cricket Club as an overseas player. Lewis remarked, “Arlene has become a very special part of our team over the past four years. She has given us so much on and off the field, and she has always been someone we could rely on.”
Lewis acknowledged the challenges of being away from family, stating, “We will miss her greatly, but we are happy she is returning home to be with her loved ones. We cannot thank Arlene enough for everything she has given us over the last four years. She has left a lasting mark on our team and will always be an important part of our Irish cricket family. We wish her all the best for the future.”
