Kansas City, June 16: Argentina’s seasoned defender Nicolás Otamendi has issued a stern warning to his team, emphasizing the need to avoid repeating past mistakes in the World Cup. As the current champions, Argentina can expect every opponent to come out with the intent to defeat them.
In a press conference held on Monday, the 38-year-old Otamendi reflected on the lessons learned from their loss at the start of the Qatar World Cup 2022, which still resonates with the team. This tournament marks his fourth World Cup and will be his last with the national team.
“I am fully enjoying these moments, as this is my final World Cup with the national team. I cherish this competition, my teammates, and the experiences we share every day. Representing my country is a matter of pride for me,” Otamendi stated.
He expressed that playing for his nation in the World Cup and having the chance to defend their title is incredibly special. The team is well-prepared and aims to deliver their best performance.
“We must remain humble and work hard. Our team is in good shape, and we are giving our all because we know every team wants to beat us,” he added.
Otamendi noted that Argentina began preparing for the tournament well in advance. However, he also mentioned that being considered a strong contender for the title does not hold much significance once the match begins.
“We understand that we are the reigning champions, so every team will want to showcase their best against us. We need to prepare not just differently, but better, and give everything we have on the field. I believe the team’s energy is currently very good,” he remarked.
The experienced defender recalled the defeat in Qatar, where Argentina lost 2-1 to Saudi Arabia, ending their 36-match unbeaten streak.
“What happened in Qatar serves as a lesson for us. No team is easy in the World Cup. Every opponent can put you in a tough spot. Therefore, we must play our natural game and trust in our strengths,” Otamendi concluded.
Argentina will face Algeria at the Kansas City Stadium on Tuesday, followed by group stage matches against Austria and Jordan.
