New Delhi, May 27: Many people enjoy flavorful and salty food, often adding extra salt to their meals. However, this seemingly harmless habit can lead to serious health issues. Excessive salt intake can be detrimental to your health.
According to the National Health Mission (NHM), a daily habit of consuming too much salt can gradually invite severe diseases. Salt is primarily composed of sodium. While the body requires a small amount of sodium, excessive intake can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney problems, and other serious health conditions.
The fast-paced lifestyle and increased consumption of packaged foods have exacerbated this issue. Individuals with high blood pressure or kidney problems should further reduce their salt intake. Health experts recommend limiting daily salt consumption to about 5 grams (approximately one teaspoon).
The adverse effects of excessive salt intake include elevated blood pressure and added strain on the heart. It can also harm the kidneys and lead to water retention, headaches, and swelling.
Health experts advise gradually reducing salt consumption. Eating home-cooked meals is a healthier option, as restaurant food typically contains more salt. Additionally, choose low-sodium alternatives, such as low-sodium salt available in the market. Be cautious with packaged foods; chips, snacks, biscuits, sauces, pickles, and processed foods often contain hidden salt. Always read labels before consuming.
Another effective method is to enhance flavor using alternatives like lemon, cumin, black pepper, turmeric, coriander, mint, garlic, asafoetida, and ginger instead of salt. Avoid eliminating salt abruptly; instead, gradually decrease the amount to adjust your taste. Taste your food before adding salt, and only add it if necessary.
