Mumbai, April 14: A cross-country skier has described his experience in the world’s longest and oldest race through the Arctic Circle as “a little bit scary.” Matt Ireland, hailing from Didcot, participated in the 137-mile (220 km) Nordenskiöldsloppet race across northern Sweden in March. His goal was to raise funds for Lowland Rescue Oxfordshire, the search and rescue team he volunteers for.
Ireland completed the grueling event in just over 27 hours, battling sleep deprivation, exhaustion, and isolation. At 36 years old, he humbly refers to himself as “barely an amateur” skier, yet he found the challenge to be “as tough as it sounds.”
Despite the difficulties, Ireland was captivated by the stunning scenery. “There was amazing, picturesque scenery—skiing through silent pine forests, across frozen lakes with towering mountains in the backdrop, and really cool sunsets,” he shared.
While he admitted to feeling a bit scared at times due to the seclusion, he also experienced an “incredible moment” during the night. “At one point, I stopped, turned my torch off, and just listened to the silence,” he recalled. “There was nothing out there, no movement, and when I looked up, I saw the northern lights.”
He emphasized the rarity of such an experience, free from light and noise pollution, allowing him to be fully present in the moment.
During his 27 hours on the snow, Ireland managed only “two to three hours” of rest, with no actual sleep. “I don’t think I closed my eyes longer than a blink,” he said. “In the early hours, it was challenging to sleep when I didn’t want to.”
He mentioned that there were moments when he had to dig deep to motivate himself to continue. After the race, he felt “hungover,” dehydrated, and nauseous from consuming high-energy foods.
Ireland took on this challenge as a reminder that feeling lost during significant life transitions can be a necessary prompt to find the next step forward.
