Fang Bo to Represent Kazakhstan in Future Table Tennis Competitions

Beijing, April 21: Former member of China’s men’s table tennis team, Fang Bo, will now represent Kazakhstan in upcoming competitions. However, this does not include the Olympic Games, World Championships, or World Cup events. Fang announced this on Monday.

Fang shared on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, “I announce my return and will represent Kazakhstan. I have established a collaboration with the Nomad Table Tennis Academy. I plan to compete in World Table Tennis events starting in June. I still hold Chinese citizenship and will not participate in those three major tournaments.”

At 34 years old, Fang helped China win the Team World Cup in 2015 and the World Team Championship in 2016. According to a report by Xinhua, Fang reached the finals of the World Championship in 2015, where he faced defeat against his teammate Ma Long.

Fang announced his retirement from the Chinese team in 2021. He concluded, “My love for table tennis is the reason I am returning. I want to challenge my limits once again.”

This right-handed player, known for his shakehand grip, has previously reached the finals in men’s singles at the World Championship. During this journey, he defeated second-seeded player Zhu Xin and reigning champion Zhang Jike.

In 2017, Fang partnered with Germany’s Petrissa Solja to win a bronze medal in the mixed doubles event at the World Championship held in Düsseldorf, Germany. He also secured silver in doubles and bronze in mixed doubles at the 2017 Asian Championship. Over the years, he has won a total of six medals, including three golds, in the ITTF World Tour from 2013 to 2017.

Fang joined the Chinese national table tennis team in 2009. In December of that year, he won both team and individual titles at the World Junior Championship, becoming the first young player from China to achieve this feat.
