New Delhi, April 21: Former Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara has called on Tilak Varma to adopt a more positive approach against spinners. Pujara emphasized that having the right intent is crucial for success in T20 cricket, rather than merely selecting shots.
Speaking on JioCinema’s ‘Champions Commentary,’ Pujara remarked, “Tilak, who scored a century against the Gujarat Titans, still has room for improvement in his batting. He needs to be more positive against spinners. I’m not suggesting he should only play big shots. When you play with intent and strive to stay positive, it forces the spinner to change their length, putting pressure on them. Tilak should focus on disrupting the spinner’s rhythm rather than just hitting boundaries.”
The former batsman added, “Tilak can step out and utilize the sweep or reverse sweep. He has multiple options, but first, he needs to understand his strengths. When I played, stepping out was my strength. If a bowler tried to bowl short, I would play a cut or pull shot from the back foot. Tilak should also step out to play his strokes, which will put pressure on the spinner. His sweep shot is also effective, making it another viable option.”
He cautioned, “Simply rotating the strike can give spinners a chance to settle into their rhythm in the shortest format.”
Tilak played a crucial role in the Mumbai Indians’ victory over the Gujarat Titans on Monday, scoring an unbeaten 101 runs off 45 balls at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium. This century was significant for both Tilak and the Mumbai Indians, as it ended a streak of four consecutive losses for the team.
