New Delhi, April 14: A cross-country skier has described his experience in the world’s longest and oldest race through the Arctic Circle as “a little bit scary.” Matt Ireland, hailing from Didcot, participated in the 137-mile (220 km) Nordenskiöldsloppet race in northern Sweden this past March. His goal was to raise funds for Lowland Rescue Oxfordshire, the search and rescue team he volunteers with.
Ireland completed the race in just over 27 hours, facing challenges such as sleep deprivation, exhaustion, and isolation. The 36-year-old, who considers himself “barely an amateur” skier, admitted that the challenge was indeed “as tough as it sounds.”
Despite the difficulties, he found the scenery breathtaking. “The picturesque views were amazing—skiing through silent pine forests and across frozen lakes with towering mountains in the background, along with stunning sunsets,” he shared.
While he found the solitude somewhat intimidating, it also led to a memorable experience at night. “At one point, I stopped, turned off my torch, and listened to the silence around me,” he recalled. “There was absolute stillness—no movement at all. Looking up, I saw the northern lights.”
Ireland emphasized the rarity of such moments, noting, “There are not many places in life where you can experience no light pollution, no noise pollution, and just be present in the moment.”
Throughout his 27 hours on the snow, he managed only two to three hours of rest, with no actual sleep. “I don’t think I closed my eyes for more than a blink during that time. In the early morning hours, it was particularly challenging to stay awake,” he explained. “There were moments when I had to dig deep to motivate myself to continue.”
After finishing the race, he felt “hungover,” dehydrated, and nauseous from consuming high-energy foods. He took on this challenge as a reminder that feeling lost can sometimes be a necessary prompt for personal growth during significant life transitions.
