Apple Explores 200MP Camera Sensor for Future iPhone Models

Mumbai, March 26: A new rumor indicates that Apple may be considering a significant upgrade to its camera technology by testing a 200MP camera sensor for future iPhone models. However, it appears that no final decisions have been made yet.

According to the tipster known as Digital Chat Station, Apple is currently evaluating a large 1/1.12-inch 200-megapixel camera sensor. This sensor is reportedly similar to the one expected to be featured in the upcoming Oppo Find X9 Ultra.

The tipster further clarifies that the 200MP sensor is being tested solely for the main camera, not across multiple lenses. It is important to note that internal testing does not guarantee that the feature will be included in the final product.

Apple May Not Release This Feature Soon!

Meanwhile, Oppo is set to launch not one but two 200MP cameras on its Find X9 Ultra. This device will feature a 200MP primary sensor based on Sony’s LYT-901, also sized at 1/1.12 inches. Additionally, it will include a 200MP periscope camera with 3x optical zoom, another periscope lens offering 10x optical zoom, and a 50MP ultra-wide camera. The device is expected to support 20x “optical quality” zoom and up to 120x digital zoom.

The global launch of the Oppo Find X9 Ultra is confirmed for April.

While companies like Oppo are pushing the boundaries with hardware-heavy camera systems, Apple has traditionally relied on computational photography to achieve impressive results without significantly increasing sensor resolution.

Timing is also a factor to consider. Supply chain rumors suggest that commercial availability of the 200MP sensor may not occur until next year. This implies that even if Apple decides to adopt this technology, it is unlikely to be included in the next iPhone release.

Currently, this remains a test rather than a confirmed feature. Nonetheless, it shows that Apple is exploring the high-megapixel territory that Android manufacturers have been pursuing for several years. Whether this exploration will lead to a tangible product remains uncertain.
