Anup Shridhar: Elevating Indias Prestige as a Player and Now as a Coach

New Delhi, April 10: Anup Shridhar is recognized as one of India’s top badminton singles players. After a long and successful career, he is now venturing into coaching.

Born on April 11, 1983, in Bengaluru, Shridhar learned the nuances of badminton from renowned player and coach Prakash Padukone, as well as from Vimal Kumar.

In the early 2000s, Shridhar established himself as a leading singles player in India. He won a bronze medal with the mixed team at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Additionally, he secured a bronze in men’s singles at the 2007 Asian Championships held in Malaysia. His participation in the 2008 Beijing Olympics marked a significant contribution to Indian badminton, as competing at the Olympic level was a major achievement for India at that time.

One of his most notable victories was against Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat, the former world number one and gold medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

In January 2010, Shridhar achieved his highest world ranking of 24. Standing at 1.89 meters tall, he became well-known for his powerful smashes in international badminton.

In recognition of his contributions to the sport, the Government of India honored him with the Arjuna Award in 2008.

After retiring from badminton, Anup Shridhar stepped into coaching and established the Anup Shridhar Badminton Academy. The academy focuses on teaching young players fundamental techniques, footwork, and mental strength.

In 2025, he was appointed as the singles coach for the Singapore national badminton team. Under his guidance, the team won medals at the Southeast Asian Games. However, he resigned from this position in January 2026 and returned to India.

Now, he continues to contribute to the development of badminton in India, playing a crucial role in mentoring the next generation of players.
