Mumbai, June 14: The history of Indian cinema is filled with films that are remembered for their powerful narratives and outstanding performances. One such film is ‘Bhumika,’ featuring the legendary actors Smita Patil and Amrish Puri in lead roles. An intriguing incident related to this film has resurfaced, where Amrish Puri actually slapped Smita Patil during a scene.
This revelation was made by Amrish Puri himself on an old talk show, ‘Jina Isi Ka Naam Hai.’ He explained, “In one scene, I needed to stop Smita Patil from leaving. I had to slap her in anger. Director Shyam Benegal wanted it to feel completely authentic.”
Amrish Puri continued, “Before shooting began, I had an idea. I asked Shyam Benegal if I could actually slap Smita Patil in this scene to make her reaction appear genuine. He liked my suggestion and immediately approved it.”
When the camera started rolling and the scene was shot, Amrish Puri unexpectedly slapped Smita Patil, who had no prior knowledge of this plan. As a result, her expressions were entirely authentic.
Amrish Puri noted that viewers could easily understand how natural Smita’s reaction was while watching the film.
Directed by Shyam Benegal, ‘Bhumika’ also featured notable performances from Amol Palekar, Anant Nag, and Naseeruddin Shah. The film was inspired by the autobiography of the famous Marathi actress Hansa Wadkar, titled ‘Sangate Aika.’
The pairing of Amrish Puri and Smita Patil is considered one of the most memorable in Indian cinema. Throughout their careers, they collaborated on a total of 16 films, starting with ‘Nishant’ and last appearing together in ‘Waris.’
