Amit Shah Reviews Flood Situation in Arunachal Pradesh with Chief Minister Pema Khandu

Itanagar, June 30: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced on Monday that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had contacted him to assess the flood situation in the state. The region has been severely affected by continuous monsoon rains over the past week, leading to widespread flooding.

In a social media post, the Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Amit Shah for reaching out to discuss the flood conditions in Arunachal Pradesh. He informed Shah about the evolving situation and the ongoing relief, rescue, and rehabilitation efforts. Khandu also appreciated Shah’s commitment to the welfare of the state’s residents.

The relentless monsoon rains on Monday caused devastation across the state, impacting thousands in 12 out of 28 districts. A disaster management official reported that the most severely affected Kayip Panior district has seen the death toll rise to three due to flash floods that began on June 23. On Sunday, rescue workers recovered the body of a 48-year-old man, identified as Saurabh Kumar Khurwar, near the Hawa Camp in the neighboring Papum Pare district.

Earlier, the bodies of a 35-year-old woman and another female victim were found on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively. Two additional individuals, including a minor, remain missing.

Since June 23, the sudden floods in the Yazali Circle of Kayip Panior district have damaged approximately 20 homes and residential buildings.

Rescue operations are ongoing in the affected 12 districts, where floods and landslides have damaged roads, bridges, and homes, leading to loss of life and disrupted road connectivity. The exact extent of the damage caused by the rains and floods has yet to be officially confirmed, as officials are collecting and verifying information from the affected areas.

On Monday, Chief Minister Pema Khandu conducted a virtual review of the flood situation across the state. The meeting included Chief Secretary Manish Gupta, Director General of Police S.D. Singh Jamwal, and senior officials.

In a post on social media, Khandu stated that he held a virtual review meeting regarding the sudden floods in Kayip Panior with the Deputy Commissioners of Kurung Kumey, Kra Daadi, Lower Subansiri, Kayip Panior, and Kamle, in the presence of the Chief Secretary and DGP. He reviewed relief, rescue, road restoration, medical assistance, and the availability of essential supplies, discussing timely aid and measures to normalize the situation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to providing all possible assistance to those affected.

In another Facebook post, Khandu referenced the India Meteorological Department (IMD), indicating that Arunachal Pradesh is likely to experience thunderstorms and heavy rainfall until July 1, with some districts expecting very heavy rain.

He warned of potential landslides, flash floods, waterlogging, uprooted trees, and disruptions to road traffic, electricity, and communication services, particularly in sensitive areas. The Chief Minister urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel in landslide-prone and flood-affected areas, heed local administration advisories, and stay updated on official weather information.
