Guadalajara, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : In Guadalajara, the WTA 500 title will feature an all-American final as Eva Jovic takes on Peyton Sterns. Both players secured their spots in the championship match with straight-set victories in the semifinals.
Defending champion and second seed Jovic dominated sixth seed Cristina Bucsa, winning 6-4, 6-1. She maintained control throughout the match, showcasing her skill under pressure. In a remarkable performance, the 18-year-old saved 11 of 12 break points, including all six in the second set. The match lasted one hour and 33 minutes.
Jovic faced challenges early on, struggling with her service games. After being broken while serving for the first set at 5-3, she quickly regained her momentum, ultimately seizing control in the second set.
This marks Jovic’s second final of the season. She aims to defend her title, which made her the youngest American player to win a tour-level trophy since Coco Gauff in 2021.
Sterns, unseeded, had to overcome a rocky start against eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova. After trailing 3-0 and 4-2, she rallied to take the first set to a tiebreak, where she converted her sixth set point. Sterns carried this momentum into the second set, forcing Samsonova into lengthy games before sealing her victory.
With this win, Sterns has reached the biggest final of her career. Following her triumph at the ATX Open in February, she seeks her second title of 2026, improving her tour-level semifinal record to 4-1.
Both finalists have not dropped a set all week, setting the stage for an exciting first meeting on Saturday in Guadalajara, marking the start of a new chapter in their careers.
