Amanda Anisimova Withdraws from Italian Open Due to Injury, Lucky Loser Replaces Her

Rome, May 8: Amanda Anisimova has withdrawn from the Italian Open due to an injury to her left wrist. The world number six was scheduled to face Jelena Ostapenko in the second round on Thursday. Following her withdrawal, lucky loser Elena Gabriela Ruse has been added to the main draw.

The 24-year-old American has not played any matches since the hard-court swing at the beginning of the season. She first withdrew from the Charleston Open in March due to an injury sustained during the Miami Open. Subsequently, she also had to pull out of the Madrid Open because of ongoing wrist issues.

Anisimova last competed at the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open, where she reached the Round of 16 in both tournaments. Shortly after Miami, she confirmed the end of her coaching partnership with Hendrik Veldhuis.

On Instagram, Anisimova expressed, “We achieved so many special moments and milestones together last year that I will never forget. The trophies and great milestones we reached will always be cherished, but the laughter and behind-the-scenes moments will stay with me forever.”

Currently, Anisimova holds an 11-6 record this season as the WTA’s “Most Improved Player.” She reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in January and made it to the semifinals in Dubai the following month, but has only played six tour-level matches since then.

Anisimova joins a growing list of players withdrawing from the Rome tournament. Earlier this week, Marta Kostyuk also withdrew due to a right hip injury.

Kostyuk shared on social media, “I was very excited to play in Rome after the best stretch of my career, but sometimes the body has its own plans. I have been struggling with hip issues for the past few days. My ankle is also not 100% fit, so it wouldn’t be wise to put too much pressure on myself right now. I’m disappointed to miss the tournament, but I look forward to returning next year. It’s time to recover and prepare for Paris.”
