Lovepreet Singh Wins Silver Medal at CWG 2026, Just Misses Gold by 1 kg

Glasgow, July 31: Weightlifter Lovepreet Singh secured a silver medal for India at the Commonwealth Games 2026 late Thursday night (Indian time). He achieved this in the men’s 110+ kilogram weight category.

Lovepreet lifted a total of 388 kilograms, just 1 kilogram short of New Zealand’s David Liti, who won the gold medal with a lift of 389 kilograms. England’s Andrew Griffiths took third place with a total lift of 356 kilograms (165 + 191).

In the snatch category, Lovepreet was the standout performer, lifting 168 kilograms on his first attempt. He followed this with a successful lift of 173 kilograms. In his final attempt, Lovepreet lifted 176 kilograms, gaining a 10-kilogram lead over David Liti, who was in second place.

In the clean and jerk, he lifted 205 kilograms and 212 kilograms, but his final attempt of 217 kilograms was unsuccessful. David Liti, who lifted 166 kilograms in the snatch, clinched the title by lifting a decisive 223 kilograms in the clean and jerk, narrowly surpassing Lovepreet.

Born on September 6, 1997, in Bal Sachandar village, Amritsar district, Lovepreet was inspired by local weightlifters. He began weightlifting at the age of 13 under local coaches in 2010. Despite financial hardships, his determination and disciplined training helped him progress at both junior and senior levels. Before joining the National Camp at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Patiala in 2017, Lovepreet represented Punjab in national-level competitions. Initially competing in the 105-kilogram category, he won medals at the Junior Commonwealth and Asian Junior Championships.

After the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) introduced new weight categories, Lovepreet transitioned to the 109-kilogram category, where he won a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.
