Shanghai, October 17 (Daily Kiran) : Alejandro Davidovich Fokina delivered a remarkable upset at the Shanghai Masters on October 17, defeating world number two Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals. This victory marks one of the biggest wins in the Spanish player’s career.

In a tightly contested match held at the stadium court, Davidovich Fokina overcame Zverev with a score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, lasting two hours and six minutes. Despite losing the first set in a fierce battle, the 26th-ranked player improved his performance, showcasing excellent baseline play. He broke Zverev’s serve in the tenth game of the second set, securing it in just 46 minutes.

The third set began with Zverev committing a double fault, giving Davidovich Fokina a crucial advantage. He maintained his momentum and closed out the set and match with strong serving, earning his place in the final of his second ATP Masters 1000 event.

In a post-match interview, Davidovich Fokina expressed, “The outcome didn’t matter to me. I focused on each point, knowing I would get at least one opportunity if I stayed strong throughout the match. I felt physically better in the third set.”

Though he had two match points when the score was 5-2 and Zverev was serving, Davidovich Fokina could not convert them. Zverev fought back for another game, but the Spaniard held his serve to claim victory.

Reflecting on his journey, Davidovich Fokina remarked, “Being here and playing this game is a great privilege. This moment has given me time to think about what I want for my future.” In the final, he will face either Rafael Jodar or Daniil Medvedev.
