Lucknow, February 22: Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi Party, has launched a strong attack on the Uttar Pradesh government regarding the FIR filed against Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath.
He accused the government of attempting to humiliate the Shankaracharya by resurrecting a 20-year-old case. During a press conference held at the Samajwadi Party office on Sunday, Yadav stated that while differences in opinion are natural, it is inappropriate to make such serious allegations.
He remarked that if the complainant is a disciple of another saint, he regretted previously withdrawing a case and should not have done so.
The Uttar Pradesh police have registered an FIR against Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, his disciple Swami Mukundanand Brahmachari, and several unidentified individuals on charges of child sexual abuse. This action was taken following a court directive.
Yadav highlighted that it is unprecedented for a Shankaracharya to be prevented from taking a holy dip in the Ganges during the Magh Mela. He noted that the Shankaracharya had sat in protest for several days during the cold weather, and the government failed to treat him with respect. He believes this entire incident appears to be motivated by political malice, asserting that the government has lost its credibility among the public.
The Samajwadi Party leader accused the BJP of creating a toxic atmosphere in the state ahead of elections. He claimed that previous incidents, such as the throwing of meat in temples, revealed the involvement of BJP workers, some of whom faced imprisonment.
Akhilesh Yadav stated that fake and edited videos are being circulated on social media to incite tension in society, urging people to remain vigilant. He also alleged that his government had initiated plans for the cleaning of the Gomti and Hindon rivers, but the current administration is not advancing development projects.
He labeled the underground pipeline projects as a “pipeline of corruption,” claiming irregularities from Bundelkhand to Lucknow have doubled costs.
In a sarcastic remark about Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s proposed visit to Japan, he quipped, “He is going to Japan but not to Kyoto.” Yadav referenced the character Karna from the Mahabharata while commenting on social justice issues and criticized the government’s policies. He concluded by stating that the public has rejected the current government and is merely waiting for the opportunity to vote.
