Mumbai, March 29: In the second match of IPL 2026, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane delivered an outstanding half-century against the Mumbai Indians (MI). With this performance, Rahane shattered a decade-old record set by former KKR captain Gautam Gambhir.
During the match held at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, Rahane opened the innings for KKR and scored a remarkable 67 runs off just 40 balls, featuring 3 fours and 5 sixes. This innings marks the highest score by any KKR captain against the Mumbai Indians.
Gautam Gambhir previously held the record, having scored 64 runs off 52 balls against MI in Kolkata during IPL 2016. He also has the third-highest score against MI, with 59 runs off 45 balls at Wankhede in the same year. Additionally, Gambhir recorded the fourth-highest score for a KKR captain against MI, with 57 runs in Kolkata in 2015.
Gambhir’s legacy in KKR is significant, both as a captain and a mentor. He led KKR to IPL titles in 2012 and 2014 and later guided the team to championship victory as a mentor in IPL 2024. He is also KKR’s most successful batsman, amassing 3,345 runs in 121 innings over 122 matches from 2011 to 2017, including 30 half-centuries.
Rahane, who took over as KKR captain in IPL 2025, has scored 590 runs in 21 matches, including 4 half-centuries.
