India Assures Adequate Grain Stock Amid West Asia Crisis

New Delhi, April 6: The Indian government has reassured citizens that there is no shortage of food in the country amidst the ongoing crisis in West Asia. According to the Food and Public Distribution Department, the stock of grains, including wheat and rice, exceeds 60 million metric tons.

During an inter-ministerial briefing on developments in West Asia, Joint Secretary C. Shikha highlighted the government’s preparedness and future plans.

She stated, “The current stock includes approximately 22.2 million metric tons of wheat and 38 million metric tons of rice, totaling around 60.2 million metric tons, which is nearly three times the prescribed buffer standards. This ensures our readiness not only for the Public Distribution System (PDS) but also for any emergency situations.”

The ministry claimed that assistance is being provided to vulnerable groups under the National Food Security Act, while the Open Market Sales Scheme is stabilizing prices in the market. Prices remain stable, and states are being supplied subsidized rice for additional distribution.

The Joint Secretary mentioned, “State agencies have begun purchasing wheat at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), and regular reviews of these preparations are underway. Sufficient packaging materials are being ensured through various sources and contingency measures to maintain smooth procurement and food security.”

According to Shikha, “Imports from key partners such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia, Ukraine, Argentina, and Brazil are ongoing. Improved mustard production has strengthened domestic supply, keeping the total supply stable. The government will closely monitor the situation and intervene if necessary.”

Meanwhile, the Petroleum Ministry reiterated that there is no shortage of LPG in the country, and supply is adequate. State governments are also conducting regular reviews to ensure smooth distribution and to take immediate action against any incidents of black marketing or hoarding.
