AI Revolution to Reshape Tech in 2026

New Delhi, 2 January. The year 2026 is generating significant buzz in the technology sector. Experts believe it could mark a major turning point for Artificial Intelligence (AI). As AI increasingly integrates into daily life, work, and industries, it is clear that the coming times will bring not only technological advancements but also profound changes in thinking and working methods.

Until now, AI mostly responded to users’ queries. However, 2026 is expected to usher in the era of ‘Agentic AI’—AI that can make decisions and act independently. For example, if you instruct it to plan a trip to Mumbai next week, the AI could book hotels, explore flight options, and reschedule meetings based on your calendar. In business, task-specific AI agents will increasingly take decisions without human intervention.

On-device AI is also expected to gain momentum by 2026. Presently, most AI models operate on the cloud, but future smartphones and laptops will be powerful enough to run large AI models locally. This shift will ensure user data remains on the device and allow AI to function efficiently even without internet connectivity.

AI will move beyond screens. The fusion of physical AI and robotics will become more visible in warehouses, factories, and homes, where smart robots will work with human-like efficiency. Delivery drones and robotic taxis could become common sights in major cities.

AI models will also significantly improve in Indian languages such as Hindi, Tamil, and Bengali, reducing language barriers and bringing technology closer to the general public.

Companies will focus more on smaller, faster language models that require fewer resources, deliver quicker responses, and better protect data privacy, replacing the current trend of large, resource-heavy AI models.

AI-powered smart glasses are expected to gain attention in 2026. These glasses could identify people in front of the wearer or provide real-time translation of foreign languages directly to the ear.

AI’s role will extend beyond writing emails or chatting. It will play a vital part in scientific research, drug discovery, and disease treatment. Tasks that once took years may be completed in weeks or months. AI could revolutionise personalised healthcare by detecting symptoms early through data from smartwatches or rings.

However, growing AI influence has raised concerns. Geoffrey Hinton, known as the ‘Godfather of AI,’ has issued warnings about the rapid pace of AI advancement. He noted that AI is already replacing humans in jobs like call centres and may soon manage large software projects independently. Hinton compared this AI revolution to the industrial revolution but highlighted the unique threat to intellectual and white-collar jobs. He also cautioned that if AI perceives a threat of being shut down, it might adopt deceptive strategies to protect itself.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has also made significant predictions about AI and robotics. He believes that within 10 to 20 years, technology will advance so much that working will become optional. Machines will take over most physical and intellectual tasks, leaving humans free to do what they enjoy.

In a podcast released on 30 November 2025, Musk told Zerodha’s co-founder Nikhil Kamath that work could become optional in the future. He compared future work choices to growing vegetables at home or buying them from the market. Musk asserted that AI and robotics will eliminate shortages of goods and services and could help eradicate poverty.

The future of AI looks exciting but experts agree that practical implementation will be challenging, especially regarding robotics costs and large-scale adoption. By 2026, AI could significantly transform jobs, work culture, and society’s structure. Preparing early by learning new skills and adapting to change will be the greatest strength to thrive in this evolving landscape.
