Ahmedabad Launches First Pet Dog Crematorium for Compassionate Farewells

Ahmedabad, February 10: In a pioneering move, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s C.N.C.D. Department has inaugurated a CNG-based crematorium for pet dogs, marking the first facility of its kind in urban India. This initiative aims to provide pet owners with a respectful option for the final rites of their beloved companions.

In accordance with the ABC Rules-2023 and NAPRE-2030 issued by the Government of India, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is actively engaged in various activities, including vaccination and sterilization of stray dogs, registration of pet dogs, medical treatment for sick dogs, designated feeding spots, and welfare activities. This new crematorium offers a scientific and dignified way to bid farewell to deceased pets.

Located in the Suez Pumping Station campus at Behrampura, the CNG-powered dog crematorium, built at a cost of ₹3 million, was established by the Shri North East Machine Karmasad Agency. Additionally, a small organ cremator has been successfully operating for the past two years to dispose of organs removed during sterilization surgeries.

The crematorium can accommodate up to three dogs at a time. It features primary and secondary chambers, ensuring that no unpleasant odors escape during the cremation process. The machine operates at temperatures reaching up to 850 degrees Celsius, with typical cremation occurring between 800 and 900 degrees Celsius. Approximately 14 units of natural gas are consumed for the cremation of two dogs, costing around ₹700 for one dog. This environmentally friendly machine meets environmental standards and operates without emitting smoke or odors. An automatic trolley system facilitates the transfer of deceased animals to the cremation machine without direct contact.

The facility also includes arrangements for human-like cremation services. With CCTV monitoring, pet owners can witness the cremation of their dogs from the comfort of their homes. Six benches are provided for the grieving family, and after the cremation, the pet’s ashes are respectfully placed in a container wrapped in red cloth and returned to the owner.

Using the crematorium is straightforward. Pet owners need to report their pet’s death by calling 155303 and send the registration receipt. The department provides a ceremonial cart, garlands, and ritual materials for the cremation. Owners can participate in the farewell ceremony, and if the pet is unregistered, online registration and donation options are available. A death certificate and a commemorative message with photos or videos will also be provided to the family.

This CNG-powered dog crematorium addresses the environmental concerns associated with burying deceased pets, which can contaminate soil and spread diseases. Canine distemper virus and rabies are common among both pet and stray dogs. The cremation process effectively eliminates these viruses, reducing the risk of infection among other dogs.

Moreover, as pet owners often regard their dogs as family members, providing a dignified farewell has become essential. Recognizing this need, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has launched this service, with plans for two additional dog crematoriums in the future. Currently, there are 19,162 registered pet dogs owned by 16,843 families in the city, making this project a significant step in honoring the lives of these cherished companions. The C.N.C.D. Department’s initiative is seen as a vital service for giving a compassionate farewell to these beloved pets.
