Ahmedabad, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : Ahmedabad’s Crime Branch has apprehended a 54-year-old man who had been evading capture for 24 years in connection with a murder case from Rajasthan. The suspect was arrested in the Vejalpur area, where he had been living under a false identity and frequently changing residences.
The individual has been identified as Dinesh Desai. He was wanted for the murder of Dalaram Nai, which occurred in 2002 in Dungli village, falling under the jurisdiction of the Sadri police station in Pali district, Rajasthan.
Following the murder, Desai initially returned to his ancestral village, Kankrej, in Banaskantha district. However, he fled to Ahmedabad after police arrived at his home. According to police reports, the murder was allegedly orchestrated due to a dispute over ancestral property and business interests among relatives.
Desai and three accomplices reportedly drove from Ahmedabad to Pali in a four-wheeler and intentionally collided with the motorcycle carrying Dalaram Nai. This incident took place near Bera Tilawani in Sharad Dungli, resulting in Nai’s death. Desai abandoned the vehicle at the scene, attempting to disguise the murder as an accident.
A murder case was subsequently filed based on police investigations and prior complaints, citing various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 302, 120(B), 481, and 308.
Inspector A.P. Jebaliya of the Crime Branch stated that their unit has been actively searching for wanted fugitives linked to long-standing cases both within Gujarat and beyond. During their investigation, PSI A.B. Desai received a tip-off about Desai’s presence in Vejalpur.
Initially, Desai concealed his identity and worked as a laborer in various locations in the Satej area before settling in Vejalpur, where he lived with his family in the Sagar Samrat Apartments on Radio Mirchi Road after moving several times.
To confirm his identity and current whereabouts, police utilized informants and technical investigations. Jebaliya also revealed that three other suspects have been arrested in connection with the case, including Ramesh Nai, a relative of Desai, who was allegedly involved in the property dispute that led to the murder.
The investigation will continue to focus on the locations where Desai hid during his 24 years on the run and whether anyone assisted him in concealing his identity. Jebaliya confirmed that they will hand over Desai to the Rajasthan police for further legal proceedings.
