After Meeting Putin, Dr. Jaishankar Says India-Russia Ties Most Stable Since World War II

Moscow, 22 August (Kiran News). India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held an important meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday. Dr. Jaishankar discussed the strength of bilateral relations and also finalised various aspects of President Putin’s proposed visit to India later this year. Dr. Jaishankar, who arrived in Russia on Tuesday for a three-day visit, met Putin at a time when the US has announced a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods.

Dr. Jaishankar met President Putin at the Kremlin. Earlier, he also held discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov. Dr. Jaishankar shared photos of these meetings on social media platform X.

According to Russian agency TASS, after meeting Putin, Dr. Jaishankar said in a joint press conference with Sergei Lavrov that since World War II, India-Russia relations have remained among the strongest and most stable in the world. He said defence and military cooperation with Russia is robust, and Russia supports India’s ‘Make in India’ goals, including joint production and technology transfer.

Lavrov stated that upcoming programmes were discussed during the talks, including preparations for the Russian President’s scheduled visit to India later this year. Lavrov described Russia-India ties as a special strategic partnership.

It is notable that regarding the Ukraine crisis, President Putin had called Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 18 August to discuss the Russia-US summit held in Alaska. Earlier, on 7 August, Putin had met Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

These meetings are taking place at a time when the US has announced a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods. The Trump administration says that by purchasing crude oil from Russia, India is indirectly supporting the Ukraine war. The US claims that these measures are intended to increase economic pressure on Russia.
