Kabul, March 17: Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense has announced that it conducted a targeted drone strike on a Pakistani military camp located in the Wana area of South Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This operation was reportedly a response to airstrikes carried out by Islamabad in Kandahar province overnight.
According to Afghanistan’s Khaama Press, the ministry stated that the drone strike targeted facilities used by the Special Service Group (SSG) commandos and other military installations. The ministry claimed that the Pakistani military suffered significant losses and casualties as a result of this attack.
However, Pakistani officials have yet to issue any statements regarding the Afghan drone strike.
Previously, the Pakistani military conducted airstrikes in parts of Afghanistan’s Kandahar province during the night. Islamabad claimed these actions were aimed at targeting terrorist bases near the border.
Khaama Press reported that Afghan officials indicated the Pakistani attacks struck a drug rehabilitation hospital and an empty container, but fortunately, there were no casualties.
The recent events highlight increasing instability in the border region, raising concerns that continued attacks could escalate tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Last week, Afghan government spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat stated that Pakistani airstrikes resulted in four deaths and 25 injuries in Kabul.
According to officials, Pakistan also conducted airstrikes on Thursday night and Friday in the provinces of Kandahar, Paktika, Khost, and Nangarhar. A fuel depot in Kandahar was specifically targeted, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
On March 13, Afghanistan’s National Defense Ministry stated that it retaliated against Pakistani military positions in the Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This action was in response to airstrikes from Pakistan that had resulted in civilian casualties on the Afghan side.
A statement from Kabul indicated that military fortifications in Kohat and a command center near the Durand Line were targeted.
The Afghan Ministry of Defense stated on social media, “In response to the Pakistani military’s incursion last night, the Afghan Air Force attacked strategic military centers and positions of the Pakistani army in the Kohat region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday morning.”
In another post, the ministry noted, “During these attacks, the Kohat military fort was targeted, as well as the command center located approximately two kilometers from the fort and the office of the fort’s commander.”
According to the ministry, these strikes resulted in the destruction of military facilities, command centers, depots, and residential quarters for soldiers, leading to substantial human and material losses.
The current tensions began on February 27, when the Taliban-led Afghan forces initiated retaliatory actions against Pakistani military positions. This response followed Pakistani actions inside Afghan territory on February 21.
After the Afghan attacks, Pakistan launched “Operation Ghazab-e-Lil-Haq,” claiming it was a response to “unprovoked firing” by Afghan forces across several sectors of the border.
