New Delhi, February 23: A group of academics has recently condemned the performance of the Indian Youth Congress at the AI Summit. They labeled it as a shameful act committed at an inappropriate time.

Led by Binay Kumar Singh, Director of the Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee Research Foundation, the group issued a joint statement on Monday. They asserted that the actions of Congress leaders could not be defended as ‘democratic dissent.’

The statement expressed serious concern from a wide segment of India’s academic and intellectual community regarding the highly shameful and condemnable behavior of Indian Youth Congress leaders at the India AI Impact Summit.

Signatories included Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, Vice-Chancellor of JNU; RD Kulkarni, Vice-Chancellor of Mumbai University; BK Kanaujia, Director of NIT Jalandhar; N Ramamurthy, founding Director of IIM Amritsar; AK Agarwal, Director of IIT Jodhpur; and the Director of IIT Dharwad, along with former professors from Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia.

The signatories stated that the summit presented a crucial opportunity for India to showcase its technological capabilities, strategic vision, and growing leadership in artificial intelligence to the global community.

The statement read, “In this context, the reported disruptions were deemed inappropriate and harmful to India’s international credibility, especially at a time when global attention is focused on the country’s AI ecosystem.”

Over 150 academics from across India, including vice-chancellors, former vice-chancellors, directors, senior professors, researchers, and intellectuals, collectively registered their strong condemnation through a signature campaign.

The signatories clearly stated that the conduct of Congress leaders present at the summit could not be viewed as democratic dissent. Instead, it was seen as a reckless and irresponsible attempt that undermined India’s global image at a critical moment for the country’s role in the tech sector.

During their protest on February 20, Youth Congress members raised slogans on issues like unemployment, inflation, and the alleged India-U.S. trade agreement, sparking a political storm and intense debate between the BJP-led central government and the opposition. In connection with the incident, Delhi police have arrested five individuals.

Prime Minister Modi also criticized Congress leaders on Sunday, stating, “It is regrettable that the leaders of the country’s oldest party are praising those who have brought shame to the nation instead of condemning them.”
