Kolkata, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has urged the West Bengal government to officially declare September 20 as ‘Bengali Language Day.’ This request is made in remembrance of Rajesh Sarkar and Tapas Barman, who lost their lives during an incident in Daribhit on September 20, 2018.
According to the ABVP, both individuals were killed in police firing while participating in a movement advocating for the rights and preservation of their mother tongue. The organization believes that the significance of this day should be recognized officially in honor of their sacrifice.
The ABVP also noted that February 21 is celebrated globally as International Mother Language Day, rooted in the language movement of what was then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh. They argue that the legacy of literary figures such as Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam in West Bengal warrants appropriate remembrance and official recognition of the Daribhit incident.
In addition to the declaration of the language day, the ABVP has reiterated its demand for a fair and swift investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Daribhit incident. They are calling for the identification of those responsible and the immediate arrest of individuals involved in the case.
To support their cause, the ABVP is organizing events and demonstrations across various locations and college campuses in West Bengal on September 20. They plan to hold programs in places like College Street in Kolkata to pay tribute to Rajesh Sarkar and Tapas Barman.
The campaign aims to keep the memory of the Daribhit incident alive while prominently highlighting the issues surrounding the rights and preservation of the Bengali language.
