Mumbai, March 31: Abu Azmi, a leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP), recently discussed the significance of cricket in India. He noted that cricket has become a major sport, with traffic coming to a standstill during matches and roads congested once they conclude.
Azmi welcomed Karnataka’s announcement of free tickets for IPL matches, suggesting that a similar initiative in Maharashtra would be beneficial. He stated, “Those who want to watch cricket should have the opportunity. If the Maharashtra government provides as many free tickets as Karnataka, it would be a positive move.”
Regarding the West Bengal assembly elections, Azmi praised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as a grounded and resilient leader. He expressed concern over the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) efforts to undermine her position, emphasizing the need for her safety and fairness during the electoral process.
He asserted that despite the BJP’s attempts, the election results would favor Banerjee, predicting her re-election as Chief Minister. Commenting on statements made by Akhilesh Yadav about the BJP’s actions against opposition leaders, Azmi criticized the party for engaging in vindictive politics, stating that no party should resort to such tactics.
Azmi further highlighted the BJP’s governance since 2014, questioning their responsibility for border security amidst reports of infiltrators. He condemned the unjust treatment of individuals and emphasized that such actions are not acceptable in a democracy.
On the topic of Naxalism, he referenced statements made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament, questioning how Rahul Gandhi could be associated with Naxalites given the tragic history of his family.
