Ahmedabad, March 8: India has clinched the T20 World Cup 2026 title for the third time, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in a historic final. Opener Abhishek Sharma played a crucial role, scoring a half-century to give India a strong start. Following the victory, Sharma expressed his gratitude for the trust shown in him by the team and management.
Sharma struggled in the tournament’s initial matches, failing to score in his first three innings. He managed 15 runs against South Africa and 55 against Zimbabwe but only added 10 and 9 runs in the subsequent games.
However, in the final, the 25-year-old found his form again. He scored 52 runs off 21 balls, hitting three sixes and six fours. Alongside Sanju Samson, he contributed to a partnership of 98 runs in just 7.1 overs. Sharma also made an impact with the ball, taking one wicket for just five runs in his single over.
After the match, Sharma stated, “It was clear to me. I wanted to share this before, but today is the best day for it. The captain and coach believed in me. I even started doubting myself. I had never experienced this before; it was a tough tournament for me.”
